When it Suits Us

  • When it Suits Us

“When it Suits Us,” was the first in a pair of interactive podium installations at the University of Chicago, exploring the college’s commitment to first amendment protected speech in the context of its disciplinary program.

  • When it Suits Us

The podium was installed in front of the school’s primary disciplinary and administrative building, Levy Hall, and faced the main quadrangle.

  • When it Suits Us

The podium remained on campus for 35 minutes before being removed by the University of Chicago Police Department.

  • When it Suits Us

The front of the podium contained leaflets passersby—themselves an audience to University speech—could take with them.

  • When it Suits Us

Leaflet, side A. The leaflets put the speech of survivors, administrators, and offenders in the same context, asking whose speech is seen as valuable and legitimate, and whose is ignored.

  • When it Suits Us

Leaflet, side B. The reverse side of the leaflet contained resources for survivors on campus, who, at the time of this installation, had few places to seek help on campus.

Apples and Oranges

  • Apples and Oranges

The second in a pair of interactive podium installations at the University of Chicago, this glass podium—stocked with apples and oranges that passersby could reach in and take—was installed in the main quadrangle during the first day of the college’s alumni weekend.

On the left, an administrator grapples with the University’s history of doling out harsher punishments for plagiarism than for sexual violence. On the right, an essay prompt asking prospective students to answer the very question its administrator invoked to account for its controversial disciplinary system.

The podium was later displayed in the foyer of Ida Noyes, an administrative building at the college, during an alumni event hosted by the University’s Pozen Family Center for Human Rights department.
